A data center is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components. It generally includes above average environmental controls (air conditioning, fire suppression, etc.), redundant/backup power supplies, redundant internet connections and high security.
The computer located in a data center is quite a bit different looking from the computer you have at home or in the office. Most of them are rack mounted. The racks are designed to pack the maximum number of computers into a given area while maintaining easy access for servicing.
The physical environment of the data center is maintained under strict control. The temperature is maintained at around 20-22 degrees Celsius (about 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit). Backup power is provided via one or more uninterruptible power supplies and/or generators. Complex fire prevention and extinguishing methods are employed to eliminate or minimize any risks of fire.
These state of the art data centers are located all around the world. At the present time there is even surplus capacity here in the US.
